AllStar Products, Options & Pricing
NOTE: I am temporarily not providing assembly or tech support services, but can still ship kits and parts.
Please check back in March for updates.
All options below are discussed in my How-To Guides, see the main page for links. These cover many details and include wiring diagrams, parts lists, usage notes and instructions, and a thorough review of how these node designs are able to provide higher audio quality and more features at a lower price than any other node. Prices and specifications are subject to change.

ANR100 Radio-Less Full-Duplex Nodes
There is no better sounding radio-less node. All ANR100's include an Analog Devices MAX9814 AGC Mic Preamp and 6dB/octave low-cut filter for excellent audio quality, smooth dynamics, and an overall sound consistent with even the best radio-based nodes.
These do not include a mic or speaker. I recommend using a genuine Alinco EMS-57 DTMF mic which are about $68 from Ham Radio Outlet, DX Engineering, GigaParts or other Alinco-authorized Ham Radio store. For speakers I recommend any 4-8Ω speaker made by a reputable ham radio manufacturer such as Icom, Kenwood, or Yaesu.
- Speaker output power is rated at ~2.5W into 4Ω and ~1.5W into 8Ω. For mobile use or where maximum volume is needed I recommend using a 4Ω speaker or 2× 8Ω speakers connected in parallel
- A bridge configuration audio amp is used and therefore the speaker '–' line (3.5mm jack sleeve) must not be grounded
- Headphones can also be used but may require a 3.5mm TS (mono) to TRS (stereo) adapter to have audio on both sides
Mic gain is optimally set for an Alinco EMS-57 (or other mics with a similar output level) and can be adjusted within a range of about -3dB to +10dB in the ASL tune-menu. Kenwood MC-60A, MC-80 and MC-85 Desk Mics also work very well with this gain setting, and have internal preamps that run on the 5V line from the mic jack.
Mic Gain Control (MGC) Option Notes
Dynamic mics may require 10-20+dB of additional gain, or preamplified mics may require attenuation if they do not have an output level adjustment. The MGC option provides a switch enabling an additional +10 or +20 dB of mic preamp gain and a knob enabling gain reduction/fine tuning. This helps ensure optimal gain and AGC/dynamics module performance.
The MGC option also includes enhanced filtering of the 5V USB power line with a 10Ω—2,200μF RC filter, to ensure the lowest possible noise when used with older preamplified mics that do not have good filtering (eg. Astatic D-104 converted to run on external power) or mics that combine the audio and 5V on one line (eg. Motorola HMN/TDN series mics).
A simpler version of the MGC option is also available – the Mic Gain Adjust (MGA) option, which provides the gain reduction knob but no mic boost switch or additional mic power supply filtering. This is recommended for users who will be using an Alinco EMS-57 or equivalent mic but who have a loud voice or like to talk very close to the mic. About 90% of users of my modules have only great things to say about the audio, but the other ~10% have reported the audio levels are too high for them (even with the tune-menu rxmix level set to 0 and rxboost=0). I test all units prior to shipping and know the levels are fine when shipped so this can only be due to mic technique (or possibly incorrect .conf file settings for those using their own RPi/MiniPC). Therefore if you have a louder than average voice or like to talk close to the mic, or might at some point want to use other mics that might have higher gain, the MGA option is highly recommended.
Supported Microphones
The following mics have been tested and confirmed to work with AllScan Radio-Less Nodes:
- MGC Option not needed: Alinco EMS-57, Kenwood MC-60A, MC-80, MC-85; Icom SM-30, SM-50 (adapter cable/switchbox needed for Icom mics). These mics will all work from the node's 5V mic jack line - no batteries needed
- MGC Option Required: Non-preamplified dynamic mics, eg. Sennheiser E835, E935, Shure SM58, Beta58, Electro-Voice RE320 (use PTT Mic Base such as an Inrad DMS-1 with Kenwood cable). Preamplified condenser mics: Rode NT3
- MGC Option not needed but other Modifications Required: Icom HM-154T, Icom SM-10: Requires 5V-8V step-up converter eg. B6287. These are excellent mics. Adapter cable/switchbox needed for Icom mics, or I can wire the mic jack for Icom mics and include an B6287 module for an additional $30 (or $5 with kits). Motorola HMN10xx/TDN83xx series are also excellent mics, requiring some simple mods.
- MGC Option and other Modifications Required: Astatic D-104: Preamp can be wired to run from mic jack 5V line rather than 9V battery
- The following are NOT recommended: Amazon/ebay/Chinese counterfeit "Alinco" EMS-57s, MFJ-299, Kenwood MC-43, other cheap hand mics, Bluetooth mics, keypad mics that output serial data rather than DTMF audio (eg. Kenwood MC-59, MC-62)
- Any mic with an internal preamp that will work on 5V and that has a level adjustment control should work well with no MGC option needed if the mic can be wired to a Kenwood/Alinco 8-pin round pinout. Studio condenser mics that do not have a built-in preamp can be used with a mic preamp providing phantom power or a B6287 module

Custom Builds
I can do custom builds with any enclosure and any other options you might need. I can also set up cloud VM nodes, repeater links, or custom hardware and software.
Radio-Less AllStar Node using a Communications Speaker
I can build custom nodes using any communications speaker if there is sufficient room to add a mic jack, volume control, etc. I include an A/B switch and external speaker level input jack with all speaker conversion nodes so that the original functionality of the speaker remains fully intact and it can still be used with any radio.
Custom ANR200 - $Contact me for details
These are around the same price as an ANR100 plus the actual cost of the speaker and $150-200 to cover additional labor and options ie. A/B switch and external speaker level input, bi-color panel mount status LED, and any other desired options or customizations. Can include mic gain and dynamics controls, aux inputs, line outputs, insert I/O jack, mic preamp/AGC bypass switch, level meters, speaker amp AGC module, etc.I currently have in stock a Heathkit HS-24, Kenwood SP-23 and SP-120 that can be made into nodes. These can plug into any PC or RPi or can be provided with a fully configured and tested Dell 3040 or Netbook.

Radio-Less AllStar Node using a Phone Patch
I can build custom nodes using any phone patch. Since AllStar runs on Asterisk (a phone system), adapting a phone patch makes a lot of sense. It is also possible to preserve the original phone patch functionality such that it can still work with analog telephones and HF/VHF radios in addition to AllStar.
Custom ANR150 - $Contact me for details
